Gender-Affirming Hormone Therapy and Thrombosis – RPTH Journal
RPTH Journal shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Mette Bøgehave et al, adding:
“Gender-affirming hormone therapy and thrombosis: What happens to the fibrin clot?
Gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) is known to influence thrombotic risk, but the underlying mechanisms, particularly the effects on fibrin clot properties, have remained unclear.
A new prospective cohort study in RPTH Journal addresses this directly, following 251 transgender women and 320 transgender men over 12 months.
Feminizing GAHT:
- Increased clot formation velocity, maximum absorbance, and overall haemostasis potential
- Reduced clot lysis
- Oral estradiol was associated with the largest changes, suggesting route of administration matters
Masculinizing GAHT:
- Decreased clot formation parameters and fibre diameter
- Increased clot lysis and fibre density
This cohort provides some of the clearest mechanistic evidence to date linking GAHT to thrombotic risk, and highlights the importance of route of administration, particularly for feminizing therapy.”
