Unmasking Thrombocytosis: What a High Platelet Count Really Means
Dr. William Aird reminds us on X that not all elevated platelet counts are alike, and understanding the underlying cause of thrombocytosis is essential for accurate diagnosis and treatment:
“Not all high platelet counts are created equal.
Thrombocytosis can be:
Reactive (infection, iron deficiency)
Clonal (MPNs like ET, PV)
Hereditary (rare mutations)
Spurious (lab artifact)
Knowing the type guides workup and treatment!”
Misinterpreting platelet elevation may lead to unnecessary concern or missed pathology. A tailored diagnostic approach is key.
