A Los Angeles County study (2008–2023) found VTE-related deaths were over three times higher in jails than in the general population (3.5% vs. 1.1%). Mortality rates in jails rose after 2014, peaking in 2021. Black individuals were disproportionately affected, making up two-thirds of jail VTE deaths. Contributing factors include immobility, restraints, and antipsychotic use. Researchers suggest improved reporting, wider anticoagulant use, and decarceration strategies to reduce risk and health inequities.
