Kathrine Kaspersen: How Voluntary Plasma Donors Helped Transform Denmark’s Plasma Supply

Kathrine Kaspersen, Resident Doctor at Department of Clinical Immunology, Aarhus University Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Kathrine Agergård Kaspersen et al. published in Vox Sanguinis, adding:

”The power of voluntary, non-remunerated plasma donation

Our new study, published in Vox Sanguinis, demonstrates how Denmark has substantially increased plasma collection through voluntary, non-remunerated plasma donation.

Between 2016 and 2025, plasma donations increased by 167 percent, bringing Denmark to 65 percent plasma self-sufficiency.

In the Central Denmark Region, dedicated plasma collection infrastructure and targeted donor recruitment increased donations more than threefold, reaching 70 percent self-sufficiency.

As global demand for plasma-derived medicinal products continues to rise, our experience may provide inspiration for other countries seeking to strengthen plasma supply through voluntary, non-remunerated donation.

A huge thank you to my co-authors, collaborators, and especially the plasma donors who make this work possible.”
