Priyam Bordoloi: The Biological Advantage of Two X Chromosomes
Priyam Bordoloi, Internal Medicine Resident, shared a post on X:
“Women have two X chromosomes.
That brings some real advantages, and a few problems too.
Benefit 1:
- If one X carries a harmful mutation, the other can sometimes compensate.
That is why haemophilia and Duchenne muscular dystrophy are far more common in men.
Benefits 2 and 3:
- Women are genetic mosaics. In different cells, a different X remains active, giving the body more cellular diversity.
- The X also carries many immune genes. Women often develop stronger responses to many infections and vaccines.”
