David McIntosh: The World Needs More Blood Collectors, Not Just More Donors

David McIntosh, Founder and Chair of United Plasma Action, shared Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service’s post on LinkedIn:

”Global blood services (well, actually a small group of rich country services) are calling for more blood donors (as below) …..

Meanwhile, globally, patients, carers and clinicians are calling for more blood collectors!

It’s typical, and quite seriously shameful, of High Income Country Blood Transfusion Services to assume that the rest of the World has the same blood problems that they do.

Well funded, well staffed and well equipped as they are, they only have to issue a quick Press Release and all the donors they need will come out in enthusiastic multitudes.

In other less fortunate parts of the World – over 80% of the whole – the issues are MUCH more serious. Unnecessary suffering and avoidable mortality are rife.

Calling for more donors is a peripheral ploy that offers very little added value.

Such calls are frustrating for potential donors in most Low and Middle Income Countries – where, however many citizens come forward, the simple sad fact is that utterly inadequate facilities exist to provide opportunities to donate and to deal appropriately with more donors’ gifts.

What the majority of countries need is MUCH more investment in collection.

Do please let’s be realistic about that.

Patients, carers and clinicians, globally, deserve nothing less.”

Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service shared a post on LinkedIn:

”Low blood supply isn’t just a Hong Kong issue.

It’s a global challenge.

Canadian Blood Services, Australian Red Cross Lifeblood and NHS Blood and Transplant have joined forces in to call for more blood donors. We want to echo the campaign and broaden the influences across border. As some countries’ inventories are facing a 30 percent fall over the pass few months. Here in Hong Kong, our inventories have dropped by around 20 percent since June. We need your help to replenish our inventories!

Extreme weather from the recent typhoon season inevitably impacted our blood collection. The heavy rainstorms and severe tropical storm in late July widening the gap between supply and medical demand of blood.

1 blood donation saves 3 lives. Join us now, save lives in one go today!”
