Syed Zohad Shah: Reducing Blood Loss and Hospital Stays in Non-Cardiac Thoracic Surgery
Syed Zohad Shah, Peer Reviewer at Springer Nature, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in The Cardiothoracic Surgeon, adding:
“Excited to share our recently published systematic review and meta-analysis.
‘Optimizing hemostasis in thoracic surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis of perioperative antifibrinolytic therapy.’
This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of perioperative antifibrinolytic therapy—including tranexamic acid (TXA) and aprotinin—in adult patients undergoing non-cardiac thoracic surgery.
Across 15 studies involving 2,169 patients, our analysis found that antifibrinolytic therapy was associated with:
- Reduced 24-hour postoperative blood loss
- Reduced total red blood cell transfusion volume
- Shorter hospital stay
- Consistent benefits in sensitivity analyses, including major thoracic procedures
- No significant increase in respiratory complications or reoperation for bleeding
The study also explored differences between intravenous and topical administration and between TXA and aprotinin, providing additional insight into perioperative blood conservation strategies.
