Laurent Arnaud: Rare SLE Manifestations Demand More Than Rare Attention – Insights from The Lancet Rheumatology
Laurent Arnaud, Executive committee member at ERN ReCONNET, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in The Lancet Rheumatology, adding:
“Rare manifestations of Lupus SLE need more than rare attention
We have just published PART 2 in the The Lancet Rheumatology
Free access for 50 days.
A international consensus effort brings together 77 SLE experts from three leading expert groups to address 22 additional rare manifestations of SLE – areas where clinical evidence is often limited and therapeutic decisions can be particularly challenging.
The manifestations covered are remarkably diverse, including:
- Diffuse pulmonary haemorrhage
- Bullous, chilblain, tumidus and other rare cutaneous lupus manifestations
- Lupus podocytopathy and interstitial nephritis
- Chorea, small fibre neuropathy, catatonia and intracranial hypertension
- Protein-losing enteropathy, lupus hepatitis and intestinal pseudo-obstruction
- Myositis and Jaccoud’s arthropathy
- Uveitis
- Anti-C1 esterase inhibitor antibody–associated angioedema
And other rare manifestations, including interstitial cystitis and lupus mastitis
The key message: when high-quality evidence is scarce, expert consensus can provide an important clinical framework – helping physicians navigate complex presentations that may otherwise fall outside conventional guideline pathways.
It is a reminder that SLE is extraordinarily heterogeneous – and our approach to treatment needs to reflect that.
Consensus strategies like these can help bridge the gap between ‘there is limited evidence’ and ‘we still need to make the best decision for this patient.'”
