”How Pericytes Control Blood Flow in the Brain

Deep within the brain’s smallest blood vessels, specialized cells called pericytes can act as tiny regulators of blood flow, physically squeezing vessels to help direct circulation.

Researchers found that vessel-wrapping pericytes can constrict blood vessels and that this behavior is closely linked to their metabolism.

The findings:

  • Pericytes wrap around tiny blood vessels and can contract to alter their diameter and blood flow.
  • Their ability to squeeze vessels is metabolically controlled, connecting cellular energy use with regulation of microcirculation.
  • By changing vessel diameter, pericytes can help direct blood, oxygen, and nutrients throughout the brain’s complex vascular network.
  • Changes in pericyte metabolism and function may contribute to disruptions in cerebral blood flow associated with ageing and disease.
  • Understanding this mechanism could reveal new targets for protecting and restoring healthy brain microcirculation.
