Richard Kollen: Preventing Deep Vein Thrombosis During Long Flights
Richard Kollen, Voluntary Work at Career break, Consultant for Private School at Cariad Intl.School, shared Kristie Leong‘s post on X:
“On long airplane flights, this exercise is very important to help avoid deep vein thrombosis.
Wearing compression socks also help on long flights.
A friend had a stroke after a long flight to Hong Kong, from London due to DVT.”
Kristie Leong, Family Physician and Health Writer, shared a post on X:
“Your calves are a second heart. Most people never turn it on.
Each time you walk or rise onto your toes, your calf muscles compress the deep veins and help propel blood back toward your heart against gravity.
One-way valves keep it from falling back.
Healthy calves eject about 65% of that venous volume in a single contraction. That is the pump that was built to fight pooling all day.
- Sit or stand still and the pump shuts off.
- Fluid sits in the lower legs.
- Legs feel heavy.
- Ankles puff.
- You move less.
- Valves take more load.
- Risk of varicosities and blood clots goes up.
You need the pump on.
Do this every hour you sit or stand in place:
- 20–30 slow toe raises
- 2-second squeeze at the top
- Drop your heels.
- Repeat.
Coffee line. Brushing teeth. End of a Zoom.
How many hours do you go without a single toe raise?”
