Mona Ranade: Can Mechanical Thrombectomy Play a Role in Septic Thrombophlebitis?
Mona Ranade, Clinical Associate Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology, adding:
“Can mechanical thrombectomy play a role in septic thrombophlebitis?
Our newest publication in Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology explores patterns of use and clinician perspectives on mechanical thrombectomy for this challenging condition.
Our findings suggest thrombectomy may be a useful adjunct to antibiotics and source control in selected patients—particularly those with persistent bacteremia, clinical deterioration, threatened venous outflow, or infected thrombus.
There remains an important evidence gap around patient selection, timing, and technique. But for patients who continue to deteriorate despite conventional therapy, removing the thrombus may offer another tool for source control.
Grateful to Y. Seo, J.F.B. Chick, G. Laidlaw, and our collaborators for this work.”
