Valerie Dehondt: Nutritional Anemia Is Associated With Increased Risk of Severe COPD Exacerbations
Valerie Dehondt, PhD Researcher at Universiteit Gent, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, adding:
“Last week I had the opportunity to present our recently published paper on anemia at ERS congress in Barcelona, a great moment to highlight our new findings to the respiratory field!
In this study, we found that nearly 1 in 5 patients hospitalized for a severe COPD exacerbation had anemia.
Nutritional anemia, most commonly iron deficiency anemia, was the most prevalent subtype and the only subtype associated with an increased risk of readmission for a severe COPD exacerbation.
All anemia subtypes were associated with a higher mortality risk, but our findings suggest that tailored anemia treatment may help reduce this risk and represents a promising strategy to improve outcomes.
Our paper, ‘Nutritional anemia is associated with increased risk of severe COPD exacerbations: a prospective cohort study’, is now published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Many thanks to my co-authors Nicolas Kint, Lowie Vanfleteren and Lies Lahousse for their valuable contributions to this work!”
