Rebecca Risman: Deciphering the Mechanisms of Fibrinolysis in Contracted Clots

Rebecca Risman, Postdoctoral Fellow at University of Pennsylvania, shared Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis‘s post on LinkedIn:

This was such an exciting story to see come together!

Investigating the modulation of fibrinolysis of contracted clots brings me full circle to my first publication during graduate school published in Biophysical Society!

In a series of studies integrating wet-lab experiments using in vitro acellular fibrin clots and computational modeling of clot formation fibrinolysis, we sought to decipher the mechanism for the differential modulation of internal (physiological) and external (clinical) fibrinolysis of contracted clots.”

Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (JTH) shared a post on LinkedIn:

Internal lysis of contracted clots is accelerated by fiber alignment and bundling

Clot contraction speeds internal fibrinolysis while hindering delivered thrombolytics, but the reason had been unclear.

Combining lab experiments with computational modeling, this study shows contraction reshapes the fibrin network into a dense periphery and heterogeneous core.

Tension alone delays lysis of single fibers, yet when platelets align and bundle those fibers, the apparent thickening drives faster internal breakdown.”
