Sophia Delicou: Mediterranean Network for Haemoglobinopathies and Regional Collaboration
Sophia Delicou, Head of Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Unit, Head of the Expertise Center of Hemoglobin Diseases and Their Complications at Hippokrateio General Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“A meaningful step forward for the haemoglobinopathy community in the Mediterranean.
It was a great pleasure to be in Rome for the launch of the Mediterranean Network for Haemoglobinopathies, bringing together leading experts, patient representatives and organisations with a shared commitment to stronger regional collaboration.
As stated in the founding Declaration, the Network aims to develop as a collaborative, patient-centred, evidence-informed and independent platform for regional cooperation.
The discussions highlighted some of the key priorities ahead: improving understanding of patient distribution, raising awareness among healthcare professionals and patients, ensuring access to standards of care, expanding access to innovation and specialised centres, and strengthening dialogue with policymakers.
It was a privilege to exchange perspectives with distinguished leaders in the field, including Prof. Maria Domenica Cappellini, Prof. Antonio Piga and Dr. Androulla Eleftheriou, among many other colleagues dedicated to improving outcomes for people living with haemoglobinopathies.
A promising beginning for a collaboration built around a common vision: equitable access to optimal care and the best possible quality of life for every person living with a haemoglobinopathy.”
