Lisa Laun: Spleen Clears Activated Platelets to Limit Thrombosis and Inflammation

“Where do activated platelets go?
Beyond happy to share our answer, published in Science Magazine!
We found that the spleen selectively filters out platelets activated by thrombotic or inflammatory stimuli, thereby limiting thrombosis, inflammation, and venous thromboembolism.
When platelets enter the splenic red pulp, they encounter activating signals from the extracellular matrix.
Under physiological conditions, this is counterbalanced by inhibitory G6b-signaling.
However, in already activated platelets, this balance is tipped, inducing adhesion and clearance from systemic circulation.
