“Today, the EHC brought patients, clinicians and policymakers together at the European Parliament in Brussels for a Round Table on ‘Bridging the Gap: Bleeding Disorders and Cardiovascular Care in Europe’, hosted by MEP Aurelijus Veryga.
The central question: how do we protect the hearts of people who live with a bleeding disorder?
Key takeaways from the discussion:
- Bleeding disorders don’t protect against cardiovascular disease, so heart health needs to be part of routine bleeding disorder care.
- People with bleeding disorders can need lifelong antithrombotic treatment for heart disease. Because thrombosis and bleeding risk change over time, treatment must be re-evaluated and patients need to be aware of the risks.
- Haematologists and cardiologists need to coordinate closely, and lived experience shows what this means in practice.
Clear guidance and EU policy attention can help make cardiovascular care for people with bleeding disorders consistent and coordinated across Europe, through more clinical data and standardised guidelines.
