Gashaw Arega Mekonnen: Expansion of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Services in Ethiopia

Gashaw Arega Mekonnen, Pediatric Hematologist and Oncologist at Addis Ababa University, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Expansion of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology (PHO) Services in Ethiopia

For the 2026/2027 academic year, Ethiopia’s national Pediatric Hematology and Oncology (PHO) Fellowship Program welcomed nine new fellows in September 2026:

  • 3 fellows at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (TASH), Addis Ababa University
  • 2 fellows at the University of Gondar Comprehensive Specialized Hospital (UOGCSH)
  • 2 fellows at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College (SPHMMC)
  • 2 fellows at Jimma University Medical Center (JUMC)

What a remarkable and dynamic transformation!

Today, Ethiopia has 27 pediatric hematologists and oncologists, with 15 fellows currently in training, including our newly enrolled fellows.

The growth of the PHO workforce reflects the remarkable expansion of pediatric oncology services across the country.

What began as a highly centralized service at TASH has grown to encompass more than 10 pediatric oncology treatment centers nationwide.

The establishment of new treatment centers and the transition of satellite clinics into dedicated treatment centers are bringing specialized cancer care closer to children and their families.

As a pediatric hematologist and oncologist and Coordinator of the PHO Fellowship Program at Addis Ababa University, I feel immense joy and pride in witnessing our trainees and colleagues grow into specialists who are making a meaningful impact across Ethiopia.

Seeing our graduates serve in different parts of the country, strengthen institutions, mentor the next generation, and expand access to childhood cancer care is truly rewarding.

This progress would not have been possible without the commitment of our national partners, dedicated colleagues, and international collaborators.

Special appreciation goes to the ASLAN Project for its continued support in strengthening the pediatric hematology and oncology workforce.

We have come a long way, but much remains to be done.

Every new specialist, every new treatment center, and every trained fellow represents another step toward equitable access to quality childhood cancer care for every child in Ethiopia.

The workforce is growing.

The services are expanding.

The future is promising.

And the impact is reaching more children and families than ever before!”
