Matthew Hazell: From Rare Blood to AI – Reflecting on Three Days of Innovation at AABB 2026
Matthew Hazell, Consultant Clinical Scientist at NHS Blood and Transplant, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“One week on from AABB 2026…
Now that I’ve had a little time to reflect, what an experience Atlanta was!
Three packed days covering everything from immunohaematology, rare blood and HDFN to molecular testing, haemovigilance, transplantation, emerging technologies and AI (NHS Blood and Transplant).
I had the opportunity to deliver education around rare blood (Werfen), learn from colleagues from across the world, challenge some of my own thinking and come home with plenty of new ideas.
Some of the most valuable moments happened outside the lecture theatre too.
Conversations over posters, coffee and between sessions reinforced just how much we can learn when we compare how different countries and services approach the same challenges.
And the whole experience was made even better by having great colleagues to share the days with, discussing what we’d heard, exchanging ideas and enjoying everything AABB and Atlanta had to offer.
A week later, the jet lag has gone and the badge has been put away, but the ideas, connections and enthusiasm have definitely come home with me.
Until next time, AABB.”
