Emmanuel Wobo: RSUTH Performs Its First Automated Red Cell Exchange for Sickle Cell Disease in Nigeria

Emmanuel Wobo, Honorary Consultant Haematologist at University of Port Harcourt Teaching hospital and Lecturer at University of Port Harcourt, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“A Major Milestone in Advanced Haematology Care at RSUTH

We are delighted to announce the successful performance of our first automated red cell exchange procedure for a patient with sickle cell anaemia at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH), Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

Automated red cell exchange is an important therapeutic intervention in the comprehensive management of sickle cell disease.

It enables the selective removal of sickle haemoglobin containing red cells and their replacement with donor red cells, helping to reduce the proportion of circulating sickle cells while maintaining an appropriate haemoglobin level.

Beyond the successful completion of the procedure, this milestone reflects the dedication, technical expertise, teamwork, and unwavering commitment of our multidisciplinary team to delivering high quality, evidence based healthcare.

Congratulations to the entire team on this remarkable achievement!

Special thanks to my teacher Professor Kaladada Korubo and my highly esteemed Chief medical Director Professor Chizundu Alikor”Emmanuel Wobo: RSUTH Performs Its First Automated Red Cell Exchange for Sickle Cell Disease in Nigeria
