Gaurav Dixit: Understanding Bone Marrow and Its Essential Role in Hematopoiesis
Gaurav Dixit, Head of Hemato-oncology and BMT at Artemis Hospitals, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Understanding Bone Marrow: The Foundation of Blood Cell Production.
Bone marrow is a specialized tissue located within bones and is central to hematopoiesis—the process through which blood cells are formed.
Blood-forming stem cells within red bone marrow develop through multiple stages before becoming mature:
- Red blood cells
- White blood cells
- Platelets
These cells are then released into the circulation, where they support oxygen transport, immune function and normal blood clotting.
Bone marrow function can be affected by several conditions, including aplastic anemia, leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma and other hematological disorders.
Understanding bone marrow biology also helps explain why persistent abnormalities in blood counts sometimes require detailed hematological evaluation.”
