Paresh P Kulkarni: Frontiers in Immunology Launches Call for Papers on Innate Immune Mechanisms and Biomarkers in APS

Paresh P Kulkarni, Research Associate at Cleveland Clinic Research, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Call for Papers: ‘Innate Immune Mechanisms and Biomarker Discovery in Antiphospholipid Syndrome’

Excited to share this Research Topic in ‘Frontiers in Immunology‘, exploring one of the more puzzling aspects of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS):

Why do persistent antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) drive thrombosis and pregnancy complications in some patients but not others?

What biomarkers in patients with persistent aPL predict thrombosis and pregnancy complications?

The ‘two-hit’ hypothesis, wherein aPL sensitize the vascular or placental milieu while a second insult activates pathological cascades, remains a central concept.

Mounting evidence points to innate immune players (complement, cytokines, myeloid and NK cells) as the missing piece that tips aPL-sensitized vascular cells or placental tissue to trigger thrombotic events or pregnancy complications.

To gather further insights into innate immune dysregulation and biomarker identification in APS, we welcome manuscripts addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:

  • Identification and characterization of innate immune cell receptors in endothelium, neutrophils, monocytes, and NK cells.
  • Analysis of intracellular signaling pathways activated by aPL in these cells.
  • Application of single-cell and high-dimensional omics technologies in patient-derived samples.
  • Cross-talk between innate immunity, coagulation, and placental cell function.
  • Experimental and animal models replicating APS-related inflammatory and thrombotic processes.
  • Novel therapeutic strategies targeting innate immune pathways.

We welcome Original Research, Reviews, Case Reports, Hypothesis and Theory papers, and more.

Manuscript submission deadline: June 25, 2027

If your work touches thromboinflammation, complement biology, vascular biology, innate immune cells or autoimmune biomarkers as they relate to APS, we’d love to see your submission.”
