Qiong Tang: Changing Perspectives on Iron Deficiency and Supplementation
Qiong Tang, Senior Scientist of Technical Service and Applications at The Lubrizol Corporation, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The Iron Conversation is Changing.
The American Society of Hematology (ASH) has updated its clinical guidance, recognizing a higher ferritin threshold for diagnosing iron deficiency in adults: less than or equal to 30 ng/mL, compared with the traditional less than or equal to 15 ng/mL threshold.
For certain higher-risk populations, the threshold may be even higher.
So, what does this mean for the supplement industry?
For Consumers: Look Beyond Anemia
Iron deficiency can exist even before anemia develops.
This broader clinical recognition highlights the importance of understanding iron status rather than relying solely on whether a lab result falls within a conventional reference range.
For Brands and Manufacturers: Rethink Iron Formulation
As awareness grows, consumer expectations will evolve.
It’s no longer just about how much iron a supplement contains.
Other factors matter:
- Bioavailability and effective iron delivery
- Taste and sensory experience
- Gastrointestinal tolerability
- Formulation stability
- Convenience and consumer-preferred formats
The next opportunity: Innovation in iron delivery.
Traditional iron formats can present challenges, including metallic taste and gastrointestinal discomfort, which may affect consistent use.
Innovative iron delivery technologies offer opportunities to address these formulation challenges.
Think beyond traditional tablets and capsules:
- Gummies / Jellies
- Liquids
- Melt-away powders
- Other consumer-friendly delivery formats
The bigger picture.
The future of iron supplementation is about more than addressing late-stage iron deficiency anemia.
It’s about developing evidence-based, consumer-friendly formulations that balance iron delivery, taste, tolerability, and convenience.
The opportunity is here for brands and manufacturers to rethink what the next generation of iron supplementation should look like.
How is your R and D team adapting its iron delivery technologies to meet evolving consumer expectations?”
