Leticia Leal: Preventing Blood Clots During Long Flights

Leticia Leal, Attorney At Law at University of Houston Law Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“I’ve seen a few posts showing people’s legs on airplanes.

I don’t know why or who started the trend, but I decided to do mine and share something useful!

Moving during long flights is important!

Sitting for long periods without moving can slow down blood flow in your legs and increase the risk of blood clots, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

The risk exists at any age. Older age and certain other risk factors increase the chances, but everyone should pay attention.

So, what can you do during a long flight?

Get up and walk around whenever possible. When you return to your seat, do 3 sets of calf raises before sitting down.

Move your ankles while sitting. Point your toes forward, then pull them back toward your shins. Try 3 sets of 20 repetitions, few times during the flight.

Contract and relax your glute muscles. While sitting, squeeze your buttocks. Try 3 sets of 20 repetitions, few times during the flight.

Squeeze a pillow between your legs.

Place a pillow between your thighs and squeeze for 3 sets of 1 minute.

Want to make it harder? Lift your feet a few inches off the floor while squeezing.”
