“Can Hemolysis Affect Laboratory Results?
A single pre-analytical error can completely change a patient’s laboratory report.
What is Hemolysis?
Hemolysis is the rupture of red blood cells (RBCs), releasing their contents into the serum or plasma.
Why is it Important?
Hemolyzed samples can cause falsely elevated results for:
- Potassium (K⁺)
- Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH)
- Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST)
This may lead to misdiagnosis and inappropriate patient management.
Common Causes of Hemolysis:
- Using a needle that is too small
- Vigorous shaking of the blood tube
- Difficult venipuncture
- Delayed sample processing
