Alberico Catapano: The Role of Triglyceride Variability and the AIFA Reimbursement Gap

Alberico Catapano, Professor at Multimedica IRCCS, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases, adding:

“Pleased to share our latest real-world study on secondary cardiovascular prevention after acute coronary syndrome (ACS).

Despite intensive LDL-C lowering, residual cardiovascular risk remains substantial.

In our cohort of post-ACS patients, we found that:

Triglyceride variability, not absolute triglyceride levels, was independently associated with recurrent ischemic events over 12 months.

A striking gap exists between the European Medicines Agency (EMA) indication and the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) reimbursement criteria for icosapent ethyl (IPE): while several patients met the EMA eligibility criteria, almost none qualified for reimbursement under current AIFA rules.

These findings highlight an important opportunity to improve secondary prevention by aligning reimbursement policies with the available evidence, potentially enhancing patient outcomes while remaining cost-effective.”
