Andrew Zapfel: The ASH’s Consortium on Newborn Screening in Africa Brought Together Over 40 People From 10 Countries
Andrew Zapfel, Adjunct Professor at The George Washington University, Interim Board Member at WCSCD, Deputy Director of Global SCD Initiatives and Alliances at American Society of Hematology, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Last week, the American Society of Hematology’s Consortium on Newborn Screening in Africa brought together over 40 people from 10 countries in Kampala, Uganda, to promote:
- Best practices in diagnostics for Sickle Cell Disease of newborns
- Strengthening consistent linkage to care efforts for children living with SCD, utilizing community health workers and community-based organizations
We learned best practices from across countries, discussed challenges, and developed new solutions. Most importantly, we grew stronger as a team across multiple countries, sharing one mission: to ensure all children born with SCD know their status and have access to care.
We were also honored with the presence of the Minister of Health of Uganda, who spoke of the importance of newborn screening efforts.
Thanks go to the incredible CONSA Uganda team for hosting (under the leadership of Charles Kiyaga) an amazing team at Revvity for providing expertise (including Marika Kase and Ida Alm-Ndiaye), Tracy Kobukindo for her senior expertise and training, Loki Communications for their support on training materials, and to Novo Nordisk for your support of our ongoing work.”
