Ashenafi Tazebew Amare: Transfusion medicine is no longer just about the blood bag.
Ashenafi Tazebew Amare, Director General at Ethiopian Blood and Tissue Bank Service, shared a post onĀ LinkedIn:
“Transfusion medicine is no longer just about the blood bag.
The latest special issue of Transfusion (Vol. 66, Issue S2), ‘Evolving Biotherapies: Stakeholders, Solutions, and the Science of Tomorrow,’ makes a point every blood service leader should take seriously: our field is moving well beyond its traditional boundaries.
Collecting, testing, processing, storing and distributing blood remain the foundation.
Nothing replaces a safe and sufficient supply. But the frontier now runs through:
- Cellular therapies
- Regenerative medicine
- Advanced biotherapies
- Precision medicine
- The technologies that turn biological materials into life-saving treatments
This shift changes how we define, organize and invest in blood services.
It requires research capacity, advanced laboratory infrastructure, a highly skilled workforce, digital transformation, robust quality systems, and partnerships across healthcare, academia and biotechnology.
For Ethiopia, the task is twofold:
- Strengthen the foundations: safe, sufficient and accessible blood for every patient who needs it.
- Build, step by step, the capabilities to take part in the next generation of transfusion and cellular therapies.
The question is no longer only “How do we collect more blood?’
It is ‘How do we build the scientific, institutional and technological capacity to deliver the therapies of tomorrow?’
That future is already taking shape. Our responsibility is to be ready for it.”
