Ayesha Zia: A New Foundation for Pediatric Pulmonary Embolism Research and Care

Ayesha Zia, Professor of Pediatrics at UT Southwestern Medical Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“For many children, recovery from pulmonary embolism (PE) does not end when the clot resolves. Post-PE syndrome can affect daily functioning, physical status and quality of life.

It was clear to me that pediatric PE research was limited by the absence of standardized definitions and outcomes. To help close that gap, I had the privilege of leading a panel of experts through the Neonatal/Pediatric SSC of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH) to develop the first consensus-based definitions for pediatric PE and post-PE syndrome research.

I was also glad to pull in my colleague Megan Griffiths in this effort as part of a much larger multidisciplinary panel whose collective expertise made this work possible.

These consensus definitions provide a common language for the field; an important foundation for more rigorous research and, ultimately, better long-term care for children with PE.”
