Ayush Bhowmik: Failed Drug Became the World’s Most Widely Used Blood Thinner
Ayush Bhowmik, Pharmacy Student at Anand College Of Education, shared a post on LinkedIn:
”’A failed drug became the world’s most widely used blood thinner.…’
1950s.
Farmers in the U.S. were complaining.
Their cattle were dying from internal bleeding.
Reason?
Moldy sweet clover.
Scientists were confused.
Then a compound was isolated.
It was named… Warfarin.
Initially?
Rat poison.
Yes. Poison.
But here’s the twist.
Doctors observed…
In low doses, the same compound was preventing blood clotting.
And today?
Warfarin is a life-saving anticoagulant.
It is used daily for stroke, DVT, and heart patients.
Serendipity is the hidden engine of science.
• Not every failure is a waste
• Observation is better than assumption
• If you ask the right questions, even a ‘problem’ can become a ‘solution’
As a pharmacy student, you are not just studying drugs.
You are learning to see patterns.
Sometimes a breakthrough does not happen in the lab… it happens in the mindset.
I also used to ignore ‘mistakes’ before.
Now I understand… that very data is gold.
According to you…
Is serendipity luck or a skill?”
