Bernard Slater Jr.: Serving on the Advisory Council for the NBDF West Virginia Chapter

Bernard Slater Jr., Business Community Liaison and Work-Based Learning Coordinator at Charleston Job Corps Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“I’m excited to share something that means a lot to me, both personally and professionally.

I will be serving on the Advisory Council for the National Bleeding Disorders Foundation (NBDF), West Virginia Chapter.

As someone who lives with hemophilia, I understand firsthand that living with a bleeding disorder comes with challenges that extend far beyond the physical symptoms. From navigating healthcare and accessing treatment to the financial and emotional burdens placed on individuals and families, there are struggles that often go unseen and unheard.

That’s why this opportunity is so meaningful to me.

Serving on this advisory council will give me the opportunity to help represent individuals and families affected by bleeding disorders across West Virginia. I’ll have the chance to bring concerns and ideas to the table, support education and awareness, help identify gaps in services, and advocate for better access to treatment, resources, and support.

I’ve always believed that the people closest to a problem should have a voice in finding the solution.

To me, advocacy isn’t about holding a title or having a seat at the table. It’s about what you do with that seat. It’s about listening, speaking up, building relationships, and making sure the people you represent are never forgotten.

I’m especially passionate about reaching individuals and families in our rural West Virginia communities, where access to specialized healthcare and resources can be particularly challenging. Your ZIP code should never determine the quality of care or support you receive.

Throughout my life, I’ve learned that some of our greatest challenges can eventually become our greatest opportunities to help others. This is another chance for me to turn personal experience into something meaningful for the people around me.

I’m grateful for the opportunity, and I don’t take the responsibility lightly. I intend to listen, learn, ask questions, challenge things when necessary, and do everything I can to make a positive difference.

Because advocacy isn’t about being the loudest person in the room. It’s about making sure the people who aren’t in the room still have a voice.

If you or someone you love is living with hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, or another bleeding disorder, I’d love to hear from you. Your experiences, concerns, and ideas matter, and I want to help make sure they’re heard.

This one is personal, and I’m all in!”
