Chai Phua: 1st Publicly Funded Hemgenix Treatment for Hemophilia B in Canada Marks Historic Gene Therapy Milestone

Chai Phua, Associate Professor at Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, shared on LinkedIn:

”A historic milestone for bleeding disorders care in Canada.

Last week, the first publicly funded Canadian patient received Hemgenix for Hemophilia B at London Health Sciences Centre.

While this moment represents a major step forward in gene therapy and hemophilia B care, it also reflects decades of foundational work by leaders, clinicians, researchers, nurses, hemostasis laboratories, blood banks, patient advocates, and the broader bleeding disorders community across Canada who helped build the systems, expertise, and advocacy needed to make innovative therapies like this possible.

Most importantly, this milestone represents hope not only for one patient, but for the future of innovative therapies in rare diseases across Canada.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this possible.”
