Consuela A. Albright: The Strategic Value of Proclamations in Health Advocacy
Consuela A. Albright, Nurse Practitioner at Cleveland Clinic, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Quick advocacy lesson: you’ve probably seen ‘the mayor issued a proclamation for Sickle Cell Awareness Month’ – but what does that actually accomplish?
A proclamation is a formal, public statement from an elected official (a mayor, governor, or even the President) recognizing a cause.
On its own, it doesn’t include funding or legal force.
So why do advocacy organizations spend real time and energy securing them every year?
Because a proclamation is a lever, not an outcome. It:
- Creates a public record that an elected official acknowledged the issue – useful the next time advocates ask that official for policy action or funding.
- Generates local media coverage, which raises visibility for events, screenings, and fundraising.
- Signals to community organizations that they have a friend in that office, which can open doors for future partnerships.
- Gives advocates a concrete, achievable ‘win’ that builds momentum toward harder asks.
It’s a small ask that opens the door to bigger ones.
That’s advocacy strategy in miniature – and it’s exactly what national organizations coordinate every September.”
