“Quick advocacy lesson: you’ve probably seen ‘the mayor issued a proclamation for Sickle Cell Awareness Month’ – but what does that actually accomplish?

A proclamation is a formal, public statement from an elected official (a mayor, governor, or even the President) recognizing a cause.

On its own, it doesn’t include funding or legal force.

So why do advocacy organizations spend real time and energy securing them every year?

Because a proclamation is a lever, not an outcome. It:

Creates a public record that an elected official acknowledged the issue – useful the next time advocates ask that official for policy action or funding.
Generates local media coverage, which raises visibility for events, screenings, and fundraising.
Signals to community organizations that they have a friend in that office, which can open doors for future partnerships.
Gives advocates a concrete, achievable ‘win’ that builds momentum toward harder asks.

It’s a small ask that opens the door to bigger ones.

That’s advocacy strategy in miniature – and it’s exactly what national organizations coordinate every September.”
