David McIntosh: Preventable Maternal and Newborn Deaths – The Urgent Need for Action
David McIntosh, Founder and Chair of United Plasma Action, shared Coalition for Women’s Health in Africa (COWHA)’s post on LinkedIn:
“Now here’s a terrifying thought…
We call this ‘the modern world’…”
Coalition for Women’s Health in Africa (COWHA) shared a post on Linkedin:
“Every year, millions of women, newborns, and babies die from causes that are preventable with timely, quality care.
The scale of the challenge is stark: approximately 260,000 women die each year from pregnancy and childbirth-related causes, alongside 2.3 million newborn deaths and 1.9 million stillbirths.
The greatest burden continues to fall on settings where proven and affordable interventions do not consistently reach those who need them most.
The challenge, therefore, is not simply knowing what works.
It is ensuring that proven solutions are financed, accessible, delivered at the right time, and integrated into health systems that can sustain them.
At the Coalition for Women’s Health in Africa (COWHA), we bring together governments, the private sector, and development partners across Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa to advance practical solutions for stronger, more equitable women’s and newborn health systems.
The evidence exists.
The interventions exist.
What is needed is sustained investment, stronger systems, and partnerships that can move solutions from evidence to implementation and scale.
Building healthier futures for women and newborns requires action across the health system.
