Gabrielle Sarlon: Key Messages to Improve VTE Management in Women of Childbearing Age
Gabrielle Sarlon, Head of the Department of Vascular Medicine and Hypertension at APHM (La Timone and Nord Hospitals), shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, adding:
“Taboo subject: heavy periods for women on oral anticoagulants! !️
The GENB-OAC study is published in the RPTH Journal!
Key messages to improve the management of venous thromboembolic disease in women of childbearing age:
- Heavy menstruation is common in the general population (30-50% of women!!) and is responsible for iron deficiency (nearly 50% of women!!)
- This problem is taboo and underdiagnosed
- Oral anticoagulants increase the abundance of menstruation and alter the quality of life of women of childbearing age.
- Apixaban causes less genital bleeding than rivaroxaban and VKA, which opens up a therapeutic avenue for this problem
- Heavy menstruation must be systematically sought before starting anticoagulants and treatment and follow-up must be adapted accordingly, in particular with multidisciplinary care
For the GENB-OAC team, this study represents:
- 9 years of hard work
- 10 expert thrombosis centers involved
- 445 French cars included
