Gabrielle Sarlon: Key Messages to Improve VTE Management in Women of Childbearing Age

Gabrielle Sarlon, Head of the Department of Vascular Medicine and Hypertension at APHM (La Timone and Nord Hospitals), shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, adding:

Taboo subject: heavy periods for women on oral anticoagulants! !️

The GENB-OAC study is published in the RPTH Journal!

Key messages to improve the management of venous thromboembolic disease in women of childbearing age:

  1. Heavy menstruation is common in the general population (30-50% of women!!) and is responsible for iron deficiency (nearly 50% of women!!)
  2. This problem is taboo and underdiagnosed
  3. Oral anticoagulants increase the abundance of menstruation and alter the quality of life of women of childbearing age.
  4. Apixaban causes less genital bleeding than rivaroxaban and VKA, which opens up a therapeutic avenue for this problem
  5. Heavy menstruation must be systematically sought before starting anticoagulants and treatment and follow-up must be adapted accordingly, in particular with multidisciplinary care

For the GENB-OAC team, this study represents:

  • 9 years of hard work
  • 10 expert thrombosis centers involved
  • 445 French cars included

A huge M E R C I to all, and in the hope that these results will help to shed light on this problem and better care!

And special dedication to Professor Morange Pierre, my friend, without whom the study would not have seen the light of day.”
