Gashaw Arega: Demonstrating Impact Through Blood Donation for Childhood Cancer
Gashaw Arega, Pediatric Hematologist and Oncologist at Addis Ababa University, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“A simple act: Donate blood. Save lives.
In recognition of International Childhood Cancer Day (February 15, 2026), I continued my 8th consecutive blood donation initiative today.
This year’s global theme, ‘Demonstrating Impact: From Challenge to Change’, is a powerful reminder that improving childhood cancer outcomes requires sustained commitment and action.
Globally, more than 400,000 children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer each year.
In Ethiopia, an estimated 8,000–10,000 children develop cancer annually.
While survival exceeds 85% in high-income countries, outcomes remain significantly lower in low- and middle-income settings.
The global target is to achieve at least 60% survival by 2030, and every effort counts toward that goal.
Today, at the Pediatric Oncology Center of Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital, I participated in a painting and blood donation program, supported caregivers, and donated blood for our patients.
Sustainable impact begins with consistent action.
My sincere appreciation to Tesfa Addis for organizing this meaningful initiative and to all volunteers who took part.
From challenge to change — I remain committed.
A simple act: Donate blood. Save lives. Your donation can save a life!”
