When Platelet Function Matters More Than Platelet Count – Glanzmann’s Research Foundation

Glanzmann’s Research Foundation shared a post on LinkedIn:

“One of the biggest misunderstandings about Glanzmann thrombasthenia is assuming bleeding is always a platelet-count problem.

With GT, platelet counts can typically be lower than normal, but the problem is that the platelets don’t function properly.

As discussed in this clip, some patients have even been treated for ITP because the focus was on platelet numbers, when the real issue was platelet function.

This is why someone with GT can have a completely normal platelet count and still experience significant bleeding.

Normal platelet count does not mean normal platelet function.”
