Heghine Khachatryan: A Century of Progress – Yet a Call for Action in von Willebrand Disease

Heghine Khachatryan, Editor-in-Chief of Hemostasis Today, Head of Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center at Yeolyan Hematology and Oncology Center, shared World Federation of Hemophilia‘s post on LinkedIn:

Century of Progress – Yet a Call for Action

It is both inspiring and deeply meaningful to witness that in 2026 we mark 100 years since the discovery of von Willebrand disease (VWD) -the most common inherited bleeding disorder.

However, beyond this historical milestone lies a critical reality:

  • VWD remains underdiagnosed worldwide
  • Women and girls continue to be disproportionately affected and overlooked
  • Laboratory variability and limited access still challenge accurate diagnosis

At the upcoming WFH World Congress 2026, the global hematology community will come together to address these gaps – from diagnostic standardization and genomic insights to future therapeutic strategies and equitable access.

As a hematologist working in a developing healthcare system, I see this not only as scientific progress – but as a global responsibility.

For countries like ours, this discussion is not theoretical.

It is about:

  • Recognizing bleeding symptoms early
  • Strengthening laboratory infrastructure
  • Improving awareness among clinicians
  • Ensuring that no patient remains undiagnosed or misdiagnosed

This is the moment to move:

from awareness to accountability to action

Let us use this centennial milestone not only to reflect – but to accelerate progress globally, especially for those still invisible within our healthcare systems.”
