Holly O’Byrne: Improving Hemorrhagic Shock Care With a Patient Centered System
Holly O’Byrne, Lieutenant at DC Fire and EMS Department, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Two years ago, DC Fire and EMS set out to change how we care for patients in hemorrhagic shock, not with a single intervention, but by building a system that meets patients where they are, when they need it most.
Since April 10, 2024, 491 units of low-titer O whole blood have been administered to 451 patients across our system.
Behind those numbers are outcomes that matter: a 93.6% survival rate among patients not in traumatic cardiac arrest, more than two dozen unintended survivors, and over 10,000 life-years saved.
Those aren’t just statistics; they represent people who made it home, families who got more time, and a system that delivers on its promise in the moments that matter most
What makes this milestone meaningful isn’t just the data, it’s the people.
This program exists because of the relentless commitment of our EMS Supervisors and field providers, who bring clinical excellence, discipline, and urgency to every call.
From the first 911 notification to the moment of hospital discharge, they are building and sustaining a true continuum of care, one that prioritizes early, physiologically driven resuscitation and seamless integration with our hospital partners.
This is what it looks like when a system aligns around patients, trusts its providers, and commits to doing the hard work the right way.”
