James P. Crowley: How Turmeric and Green Tea May Affect Blood Sugar and Blood Pressure
James P. Crowley, Professor of Medicine Emeritus at Brown University, Captain at U.S. Navy Reserve, shared a post on LinkedIn, adding:
“‘Turmeric is a spice known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It contains curcumin, a compound that may help lower blood sugar levels.
A review found that regularly consuming curcumin lowers blood sugar and blood lipid levels.
Turmeric tea is made from powdered turmeric. While turmeric supplements may help lower blood sugar levels, further research is needed to determine if turmeric tea offers the same benefits.
‘Green tea has a reputation as a heart-healthy beverage. This is thought to be due to compounds in green tea called catechins that may help lower blood pressure in several ways:
- Catechins act as antioxidants, helping neutralize free radicals that can damage blood vessels. This can help blood vessels stay more flexible and support better blood pressure control.
- Improve blood vessel function: Catechins may help the blood vessel lining, called the endothelium, function more effectively. A healthy endothelium produces more nitric oxide, a natural compound that relaxes and widens blood vessels, lowering blood pressure.
- Possible ACE inhibitor effects: Some research suggests that green tea may have a mild effect on angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE).
This action is similar to that of prescription drugs called ACE inhibitors, used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure).’
