José Antonio García Erce: A Shared Responsibility in Transfusion Medicine
José Antonio García Erce, Director of the Donation Center, Navarre Health Service (Osasunbidea), shared Katrina Snow’s post on LinkedIn:
“Plasma is possibly the scarcest blood component at that time and yet with the highest rate of inadequate transfusion.
The INR/INR does not predict the risk of bleeding, and is not validated to monitor or indicate treatment in non-anticoagulated patients.
It would only be validated for monitoring treatment with oral anti-vitamin K anticoagulants.”
Katrina Snow, Transfusion Safety Officer at North York General Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“I love this video from Choosing Wisely Canada highlighting Transfusion Medicine Recommendation number 3:
Don’t transfuse plasma to correct a mildly elevated INR (less than 1.8) or aPTT before a procedure.
Plasma is liquid gold.
In Canada, we currently use more plasma than we produce, making us heavily reliant on imported plasma to meet patient needs.
Every unit represents a precious, generously donated resource that should be used thoughtfully and according to evidence-based practice.
Appropriate plasma utilization isn’t just about avoiding unnecessary transfusions, it’s about protecting patients, stewarding a limited resource, and helping ensure a sustainable plasma supply for the future.”
