Leonardo Furtado Freitas: A Rare Case of Choroid Plexus Hemorrhage Presented at the Florida Radiological Society Annual Meeting
Leonardo Furtado Freitas, Clinical Associate Professor of Neuroradiology at Florida International University, shared on LinkedIn:
”Proud to share another meaningful academic milestone from our team at Baptist Health South Florida and Florida International University.
Our medical student, Alena Khalil, presented our poster, ‘Choroid Plexus Hemorrhage with Blood-CSF Barrier Disruption in Multivessel Occlusive and Hematologic Disease,’ at the Florida Radiological Society Annual Meeting.
This work describes a rare and educational neuroimaging case involving isolated choroid plexus hemorrhage secondary to ischemic injury of the choroid plexus in a patient with extensive multivessel cerebrovascular occlusive disease and a concomitant hematologic disorder.
The case illustrates how disruption of the blood–CSF barrier can lead to intraventricular hemorrhage without an associated parenchymal hemorrhage—an uncommon presentation that radiologists should recognize.
Through multimodality imaging, including CT, MRI, and vascular imaging, we were able to demonstrate the underlying vascular compromise and correlate the imaging findings with the proposed pathophysiology.
Cases like this emphasize the value of careful image interpretation, clinicoradiologic correlation, and collaboration across specialties.
They also highlight how rare cases can provide important insights into disease mechanisms and expand our understanding of cerebrovascular pathology.
Congratulations to Alena for an excellent presentation and for her dedication to academic medicine.
It is always rewarding to mentor students who are passionate about research and committed to advancing patient care through scientific inquiry.
Congrats to all co-authors Carlos Dier, Dr Kevin Abrams and Charif Sidani.”
