Maia Meier: Advancing Hemophilia Care in Nepal – Project Elevate Her Visits Civil Service Hospital

Maia Meier, Clinical Exercise Physiologist at Maia Letitia Fitness, shareMaia Meierd a post on LinkedIn:

“Yesterday was a really meaningful day here in Kathmandu.

I had the opportunity to visit the Hemophilia Care Unit at Civil Service Hospital and spend time with Dr. Bishesh Sharma Poudyal and his team, as well as the Foundation for Bleeding Disorders Nepal.

Learning more about bleeding disorder care in Nepal, the challenges around diagnosis and access to treatment, and particularly the experiences of women and girls.

One of the most meaningful parts of the day was simply sitting together with patients and families, sharing our experiences and listening to their stories.

Different countries.

Different healthcare systems.

Different challenges.

But so many shared experiences.

We also talked about how Project Elevate Her can work alongside the Foundation to help raise awareness among women and girls.

Helping more women recognize that their bleeding symptoms may not be ‘normal,’ understand when to seek care, and ultimately help more women reach an appropriate diagnosis and access the treatment they need.

The solutions have to be shaped by the people and organizations doing this work here in Nepal, but I hope Project Elevate Her can help amplify their work, bring greater attention to these gaps, and support their efforts in whatever way I can.

This is exactly why Project Elevate Her extends beyond the mountains.

Manaslu may have brought me to Nepal, but listening, learning and helping amplify the voices of women and girls living with bleeding disorders is an important part of why I’m here.

A huge thank you to Dr. Bishesh and his team, and the Foundation for Bleeding Disorders Nepal for welcoming me so warmly and for such open and valuable conversations.

Where you live should never determine whether you have access to diagnosis, treatment and care.”
