Molly Lippold-Meinholz: The Magic of Camp for Kids With Bleeding Disorders

Molly Lippold-Meinholz, Program Manager with the Comprehensive Program for Bleeding Disorders at UW Health, shared a post on LinkedIn:

”I have been trying to figure out how to put this week into words and honestly, I am not sure I can.

I am home from another amazing week at Camp Klotty Pine and I am feeling VERY grateful.

My love for summer camp started way back in third grade when I went to Camp Alice Chester. I loved everything about it.

The friendships, the independence, the ridiculous camp games, being outside all day, staying up way too late, and just getting to be a kid. I was hooked!!

That love followed me into high school and college, and in 2015 and 2016 I got to be a counselor at Camp Silverbrook. I got to experience camp from the other side and really started to understand just how much one week at camp can mean to a kid.

And now, somehow, I get to be a professional AND still go to summer camp.

Honestly, what a dream. I get to combine something I have loved since I was a kid with work I am incredibly passionate about in the bleeding disorders community. I get to spend a week with kids who live with bleeding disorders and watch them swim, laugh, make friends, learn, compete over the most random things imaginable, build confidence, and become more independent in managing their health.

I get to watch kids realize that their bleeding disorder is not who they are, but just one part of who they are.
I get to watch kids try things they were nervous about and absolutely crush it.

And I get to work alongside an incredible group of people who give so much to make this week happen.

There is something pretty cool about realizing that the thing you loved so much as a kid has followed you into your career, and that you still get to be a part of it.

Third grade me at Camp Alice Chester definitely did not have ՛professional who still gets to go to summer camp՛ on her life plan, but I am VERY glad that is how things turned out.
I am exhausted. My voice is questionable. My laundry is staring at me. My brain is probably still at camp.

But I am incredibly grateful.
