At the same time, I began to get deeply involved in stem cell transplantation.
The possibility of curing diseases that had reached the limits of conventional treatment was extraordinary.
As physicians, we sometimes miss the immediate satisfaction our surgical colleagues experience after removing a tumor or repairing an organ.
Transplantation gave me a similar feeling: a patient with an otherwise fatal hematologic disease could undergo an extraordinarily complex treatment and potentially emerge cured.
A major turning point came in December 2013, when I joined the Cleveland Clinic as a research fellow in Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics. I entered what I thought of as ‘HLA land.’
I learned transplantation from another perspective—donor matching, HLA, KIR biology, immunogenetics, and their relationship to transplant outcomes.
Equally influential were the BMT rounds with physicians including Navneet Majhail and Ronald Sobecks, where laboratory immunology became directly connected to patients at the bedside.
My research during this period, including work on donor KIR genotype and transplantation outcomes, became closely linked to my PhD research in transplantation and pharmacogenetics.
After completing my PhD in Clinical Hematology and Stem Cell Transplantation in 2016, I continued patient care, teaching, and transplantation in Egypt.
Participating in the development of the first bone marrow transplantation experience in Upper Egypt in 2016 was particularly meaningful.
Bringing this potentially curative treatment closer to patients who previously had to travel to Cairo reinforced my belief that medical progress matters most when it becomes accessible to the patients who need it.”
