Pediatric hematology is not simply adult hematology in smaller patients.
Normal hematologic parameters vary significantly with age, from the physiological anemia of infancy to dynamic changes in leukocyte and platelet counts.
Misinterpretation of these age-specific variations can lead to unnecessary investigations or, more importantly, missed diagnoses.
In clinical practice, understanding these nuances is essential when evaluating anemia, thrombocytopenia, or leukocytosis in children.
The challenge lies not only in diagnosis, but in distinguishing normal developmental physiology from true pathology.
