“Reticulocytes: The Young Red Blood Cells.
Reticulocytes are immature red blood cells released from the bone marrow into peripheral blood.
Their presence reflects the bone marrow’s ability to produce RBCs effectively and respond to anemia, blood loss, or hypoxia.
Key Highlights: Contain residual RNA
- Mature into RBCs within 1–2 days
- Best identified using supravital stains
- Important marker of erythropoietic activity
Clinical Importance:
- Increased Reticulocyte Count – Hemolytic anemia, hemorrhage, recovery after treatment
- Decreased Reticulocyte Count – Bone marrow suppression, nutritional deficiencies, chronic disease
Reticulocyte count provides valuable insight into hematologic health and bone marrow response.”
