“Why is Sodium Citrate the Anticoagulant of Choice for Coagulation Tests?
Not all anticoagulants work the same way.
Unlike EDTA, sodium citrate binds calcium reversibly, allowing calcium to be added back during laboratory testing.
This makes it the ideal anticoagulant for evaluating the body’s clotting mechanism.
Common Tests Performed Using the Light Blue Tube:
- PT (Prothrombin Time)
- APTT
- Fibrinogen
- Coagulation Factor Assays
Laboratory Tip:
Always ensure the tube is filled to the correct level. An incorrect 9:1 blood-to-anticoagulant ratio can significantly affect coagulation test results.
