Rob Maloney: From Being Important to Being Useful
Rob Maloney, Chief Executive Officer of Hemophilia of Georgia, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“For most of my career, I was trying to become important.
I wouldn’t have said it that way at the time. I would have called it ambition.
I wanted more responsibility. A bigger job. Another hospital. The next opportunity.
And to be clear, I don’t think ambition is a bad thing. It pushed me. It opened doors.
It helped me provide for my family and gave me the chance to lead organizations and people I cared deeply about.
But somewhere along the way, the question started changing.
It used to be, ‘How far can I go?’
Now it’s, ‘What is all of this for?’
There wasn’t one dramatic moment.
Maybe it was raising four children. Maybe it was losing a job I thought was part of the plan. Maybe it was getting older and realizing there are only so many chapters in a career.
Maybe it was my faith becoming less theoretical and more central to how I wanted to live.
Then I came to Hemophilia of Georgia.
It’s a smaller organization than many of the health systems where I spent my career.
My world got smaller.
Strangely, the work got bigger.
I know the names of the people doing the work. I hear stories about individual patients. I see where the money goes. I can watch an idea move from a conversation in a meeting to something that actually changes a family’s life.
That forced me to rethink the scorecard I’d carried for a long time.
Title.
Size.
Revenue.
Recognition.
Those things aren’t meaningless. But I’m not sure they answer the question I care about now:
Was I useful with what God gave me?
I still have ambition. I still like to build things. I still push too hard sometimes.
But at 52, I’m less interested in becoming important.
I’d rather be useful.
And I’m learning those aren’t always the same thing.”
