Shabnam Arsiwala: Did You Know Sickle Cell Disease Can Threaten Vision?
Shabnam Arsiwala, Director ,Sickle Cell Disease Program at Children’s Mercy Kansas City, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Did you know sickle cell disease can threaten vision?
Sickle cell retinopathy occurs when sickled red blood cells block retinal blood vessels, leading to ischemia, abnormal vessel growth, bleeding, retinal detachment, and potentially permanent vision loss. It can occur in all forms of SCD and is often asymptomatic until significant damage has occurred.
Early detection matters. Regular dilated eye exams and close collaboration between hematologists and ophthalmologists are essential to preserving sight and improving quality of life for people living with SCD.”
