Stéphanie Forté: Advancing Stroke Prevention in Adults With Sickle Cell Disease Through Transcranial Doppler
Stéphanie Forté, Principal Researcher at the Innovation Hub at the CHUM Research Center (CRCHUM), shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, adding:
“Stroke screening should not stop in adults with sickle cell disease.
Transcranial Doppler (TCD) is standard in children, but rarely used in adults due to limited data.
At CHUM – University of Montreal Hospital Center, this study co-led with hematologist-in-training Olivier Pouliot and neurovascular expert Gregory Jacquin, we show that:
- TCD is feasible in 92% of adults with SCD
- A complete exam in 76%
- It provides valuable, real-world hemodynamic insights
Adult physiology is different: velocities decline with age, and pediatric thresholds do not apply.
New markers, such as flow asymmetry, may better capture stroke risk.
Why this matters:
TCD is low-cost, non-invasive, and scalable, making it a powerful tool for global neurosurveillance, especially where MRI is not accessible.
We are building an innovative multidisciplinary neuro-radiology–hematology program focused omn stroke prevention in SCD, combining hematology, neurology, imaging, and artificial intelligence to develop precision risk models and improve prevention across the lifespan.
Thank you to all the patients, their families, the clinical and administrative hematology and neurology teams, and the Canadian Hematology Society, on behalf of all the dedicated coresearchers: Costa Kazadi, Chrystelle Charles, Jonathan St-Onge, Olena Bereznyakova, Marie-Andrée Panzini, Julián Alejandro Rivillas and mentor/visionary Christian Stapf.
Thank you to the Quebec Sickle Cell Anemia Association (AAFQ/SCAAQ), the CHUM Foundation (University of Montreal Hospital Center Foundation), the Erythrocytes and Sickle Cell Disease Network (RED), and the University of Montreal.”
